How to Achieve a Flawless Base on Combination Skin!*

This has been a topic that I have long avoided and have been most afraid to write. As I had mentioned in my latest blog post, I had spoken about my overbearing insecurities that incessantly told me my skin isn't good enough. I always strived to get the best skin that I can and now I can share with my patient biscuits the secrets to it all! Here are my secrets to achieving a flawless base for my combination skin!
When it comes to getting flawless skin, my regime and what I do to my skin may affect your differently. I use a combination of makeup and skincare to achieve a flawless base. This blog is predominantly targeting those have the same or similar skin type as me but there will be some tips and tricks that everyone can take advantage of.

Here's a little briefing on my skin and what I like. I have combination to dry skin and love products that;

  • are hydrating and tends to be dewy or glowing
  • has blurring effects on the skin
  • fills in pores
  • has light to medium coverage for foundations and concealers
  • must be lightweight but long-lasting
  • is hydrating and softens the skin
  • targets large pores
  • smooths textured skin
  • treats blackheads and whiteheads
  • reduces or fades dark spots or pigmented skin
  • gives sun protection
Before we start, please keep this in mind...

By understanding this, your skincare journey will be a happier and healthier one.

Now there's a lot of contributing factors that involve into a flawless which combines the nature of both makeup and skincare. Many are told that it starts from the inside of your skin when it comes to perfecting the base and I am completely behind this. No matter how much makeup you pack on your skin, you will always see your skin's flaws peeking through. This is especially the case with acne, blackheads, cracked & dry surfaces, textured skin and so on. So moving from this philosophy, it only makes sense if we begin with talking about skincare.

In 2018, I had introduced Korean Skincare into my routine and it had made the biggest difference to my skin. Korean Skincare have always believed in "less is more" and in comparison to Western Skincare, this holds true. But also, the way I had used makeup was more focused on "perfecting" what I got and enhancing my features. Laying on that makeup base had to always be light and simple.

With my asian background, my skin is quite light and fragile. It gets damaged very easily and is prone to react badly to changes (especially when it comes to the shift in seasons). So here are the secrets to a flawless base (some you even heard before);

  1. Apple a sheet mask a day
    This is one of the most underrated luxuries in the beauty world when it comes to skincare. A face mask does wonders for the skin. Once you got your regime in order and a face mask can help you maintain the health of your skin with minimal effort. You don't have to spend too much money and you just need consistency!

    Some of my favourites are;
    Wishtrend Natural Vitamin 21.5 Enhancing Sheet Mask, A'PIEU Real Big Yoghurt One-Bottle, Dear Klairs Rich Moist Soothing Tencel Sheet Mask
  2. Use a toner daily
    I will be saying this til the day I die, a toner is something you MUST have in your skincare routine. It helps to repair and build back the texture in your skin. It balances out the moisture levels in your skin and it also promotes new skin to form. The "7 Skin Method" can also be applied in replacement to a lot of your skincare steps. This gives you a soft and smooth base on the daily.

    Some recommendations are:
    COSRX AHA/BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner, Son & Park Beauty Water, Pyunkang Yul Mist Toner, Dear Klairs Supple Preparation Facial Toner, Kiehl's Calendula Herbal Extract Alcohol-Free Toner, Shu Uemura TSUYA Skin Refining Vita-Glow Lotion Moist Toner
  3. Double Cleanse after you wear makeup
    Even though this doesn't necessarily give you a flawless base, but it is a step that helps you prepare a nice and clean base for the next day. This step is all about cleansing your face twice using two different types of cleansers to capture all the impurities in your skin. Use one water-based cleanser and one cleansing oil. This will give you the best results. In turn by doing this, you will again maintain the health of your skin. The key to this is to be patient and to use a gentle tool that won't irritate your skin. I have written more on this if you guys want to check it on Let's Face It blog post.

    Some recommendations are:
    Dear Klairs Gentle Black Deep Cleansing Oil, Son & Park Beauty Water, COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser, COSRX Salicylic Acid Daily Gentle Cleanser, SHU UEMURA Cleansing Oils, Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water-Gel Cleanser
  4. Use a moisturiser before applying makeup
    This applies to all skin types. When your skin is thirsty and needs to find moisturise, it will take it from the closest thing to it. And if this happens to be your makeup, it will take it from there. This is where you will notice your makeup becoming clumpy, dry or even patchy. At times, it may not be your skin but it definitely helps to keep your makeup lasting longer and fresher.

    Some of my favourites are;
    Dear Klairs Rich Moist Soothing Cream, Pyunkang Yul Moisture Cream, COSRX Hyaluronic Acid Intensive Cream, Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream, Philosophy Take a Deep Breath Day and Night time Moisturiser
  5. Incorporate Exfoliation in your Skincare
    Recently I wrote an extensive guide to "Exfoliation" on Let's Face It blog. It explains the benefits and the How-To's to give you the soft, smooth and flawless base. Exfoliation promotes a new layer of skin to be formed. I add this into my skincare routine every 2-3 days and it has truly been a blessing. Out of the skincare steps, this has been the biggest contributing factor to achieving my flawless base. And because I am a huge fan of this product, the COSRX Two-in-One Poreless Power Liquid is the one product that helps you to get that smooth complexion by hiding all the stubborn little bumps away. It also reduces your pores!

    Some of my other recommendations are:
    COSRX Two-in-One Poreless Power Liquid, COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid, COSRX AHA Whitehead Power Liquid, Neogen Bio Peel Gauze Green Tea, COSRX Pimple Pads
  6. Prime, prime, prime your Face!Right after you take care of your skin, you should put on a primer so that there is a barrier between your skin and the makeup. This makes you less prone to breakouts. For my combination skin, there's a few factors when I reach for a primer and these include the weather, my skin condition on that day and what I'll be doing. But for the most part, my combination skin makes it tricky to get a primer that is a right fit for all parts of my face. So here's the simple secret; why not use multiple primers? There's such thing as using two different masks, so why not do the same for primers. In my T-Zone, I use oil-control and pore-filling primers. Everywhere else, I use a hydrating primer.

    Some of my recommendations are:
    Hourglass Cosmetics Veil Mineral Primer, Smashbox Photofinish Foundation Primer, Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base, Touch in Sol No Poreblem Primer, VDL Lumilayer Primer, Giorgio Armani Primer
  7. A Face Mist can make it all better!
    With my combination skin, a face mist is a must! My skin tends to get dry and as a consequence to this, my makeup by the end of the day becomes patchy or extremely oily. And the remedy to all this is something so simple. Having a face mist gives your skin the temporary hydration boost it needed to refresh your makeup as well as your skin.

    Some of my favourites are:
    COSRX Cooling Aqua Mist, Shu Uemura Fresh Top Coat Makeup Fix Mist, MAC Cosmetics Fix Plus Spray
Well that's all my secrets laid on the table. As you can see with many of these tips, they are simple and easy things that you probably have already been doing. Keep in mind everyone has a different skin type and different concerns to their skin to me and these tips may or may not work for you but I hope that they do!
