Review: COSRX Aloe Soothing Sun Cream SPF 50+ *

Sunscreen is one of the least glamorous products on the market that is often forgotten or dismissed and is not prioritised. This is especially the case for people under the ages of 21. For those who dwell under the sun (which is all of us), sunscreen is the one barrier for our skin that saves us the most from ageing, wrinkles, dark spots and dryness. But we don't use it because we're afraid it would disturb our makeup or just see the point. Well, I am here to recommend the COSRX Aloe Soothing Sun Cream that you can use with your makeup! Find out how and why.

Thanks to Let's Face It, they have introduced to me a new addition to the "day time" squad for my skincare routine. For years, I had always strictly used sunscreen on its own and never have I thought to combine it with my beauty routine. Back in the day, sunscreen had always been nauseating, greasy, tacky and left a strong white cast on the skin. But with miraculous developments in skincare, sun screens are now made to be more comfortable to wear and are able to be paired with beauty products, such as foundations, primers and so on without it affecting the performance of your makeup.

There isn't a lot of reviews, references or articles that demonstrate or show how we can incorporate sunscreen into our makeup routine and it can be quite daunting to apply under your makeup. In this blog post, I am guarantee to you that the COSRX Aloe Soothing Sun Cream can both protect your skin from harsh UV rays and be a great day-time skincare base for your skin.

The ingredients listed used to create this product are:
Water, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Cyclopentasiloxane, Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Isoamyl P-Methoxycinnamate, Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Alcohol,Dimethicone, Glyceryl Stearate, Butylene Glycol, Titanium Dioxide, C14-22 Alcohols, Polymethyl Methacrylate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Aloe Arborescens Leaf Extract, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Peg-100 Stearate, Silica, C12-20 Alkyl Glucoside, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Aluminum Hydroxide, Stearic Acid, Caprylyl Glycol, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Carbomer, Xanthan Gum, Triethanolamine, Sodium Hydroxide, Fragrance, Phenoxyethanol, Disodium Edta
The main ingredient promoted in this is the Aloe Vera Leaf Extract. This ingredient has so many benefits to treat your skin. It not only moisturises the skin, but also can sooth inflammations, sun burns, irritations and redness. So if you happen to burn in the sun after the fact, this protect can help make the pain easier to tolerate.

The COSRX Sun Cream offers the following:

  • protects your skin from both UVA and UVB rays
  • has a lightweight consistency
  • contains 5,500 ppm of Aloe Vera Leaf Extract that absorbs 4 times quicker than water
  • will moisture, soothe and protect your skin
  • soothes irritations, sunburns, inflammations and redness during usage
  • no greasiness, no white case and no residue
  • contains SPF 50+ and PA +++ (if you guys don't know what these are - I'm going to link a blog post by Michelle who runs "Lab Muffin Beauty Science" who explains these very well! She's a skincare fanatic and has the science goods to back up the claims. The link to the blog is here.)
  • has stable inorganic and organic UV blockers
As you guys know, I have been using products to help brighten my complexion and to find the best combination of ingredients to help with my dark spots and uneven texture. And I thought it was appropriate to write about a sunscreen that I really enjoy that not only worked for my combination skin but also works underneath my makeup as well.

Not everyday do I wear makeup, but I wanted to be rest assured that no matter what I put underneath my makeup, it'll still work for me. And the COSRX Sun Cream does just that.

There's nothing interesting about it in the packaging department and to be honest it lacks colour and appeal. If this didn't have the amazing reviews, I don't think I would have given it a thought just by looking at it. It comes in a plastic tube with a snap on black lid. This is especially handy for travelling and convenient to pop in your bag for reapplication.

This product looks like any other sun screen on the shelf, but when applied it's a whole other feeling. You instantly feel a temporary cooling and soothing sensation which waken your skin.

As you blend it into your skin, you start to feel the product have a light balmy feeling. You can spread it very easily with no friction or tucking on the skin.

Once completely blended, you can see the skin looks smoother, more hydrated and feels softer as well. There is no signs of greasiness, tackiness, whiteness or residue on the skin. You can see this beautiful natural glow radiating from the skin.
Left: With the product - Right: Without the product
After 6-8 minutes, the sun cream has completed absorbed into the skin thanks to the Aloe Vera Leaf Extracts. You can see from the image above the big difference it has made to my skin. After it had absorbed and settled into the skin, you can see how much smoother, softer and even my complexion becomes. My hands are especially dry (similar to certain parts of my face) and it has completed moisturised it and given it some hydration. But this would still not replace my daily moisturiser.

Product Application

This product is just fantastic! It is suggested to be applied as the last step of your day-time skincare routine and as your first product in your makeup routine as a base. Where it should go in the following order;

  1. Cleanser
  2. Toner
  3. Essence
  4. Moisturiser
  5. Sunscreen
  6. Makeup

You must spread the cream evenly across the skin, covering your neck as well 30 minutes before leaving your house. The reason for this is so the sun cream would evenly settle into the texture of your skin for the most even coverage so that there isn't any gaps or missed areas.

After 2 hours of sun exposure, it is suggested to be reapplied again (if you had worn it alone). But with makeup application, it's a little tricker to reapply again. So I would suggest a second coating of the sun cream before makeup application and to wear other means of sun protection, such as a hat, or an umbrella. Or even to avoid harsh sunny areas. I would not recommend retouching with a powder containing SPF as it would lighten your overall complexion and it would make your skin more cakey.

Depending on the size of your face, it is recommended that you apply at least 2mg of the sun cream per square centimetre of your face. Too little product would not give you the right amount of protection you need from the sun's rays.

What is there more to say? The COSRX Aloe Leaf Extract Sun Cream has stolen my heart. And it's the perfect addition to your day time skincare routine that compliments your makeup routine as well. Why not give it a go? You'll see that over time you'll get smoother skin, your skin would retain moisture better, you would have less redness and the dark spots on your skin will start to fade away. I have noticed all of this as well as seeing a "glow from within" as soon as I apply it, which gives my skin that luminosity for a dewy makeup look.

You can pick this up from "Let's Face It" for just under $19AUD and they also offer After Pay to make your purchase, that much easier. They offer free shipping if you spend over $60 worth of products and have a loyalty program. I mean, they're just rewarding you for taking care of your skin. How great is that?!
